1). To conduct theoretical and applied research on topics related to the sustainable use of inland aquatic ecosystems, including rivers, lakes, wetlands, groundwater aquifers and, as appropriate, downstream estuarine systems, and to disseminate the results of such research efforts via academic presentations and journals, seminars, courses, workshops and professional committees, books; the Internet, and via provision of technical assistance to organizations, agencies and NGOs involved in water-related activities and programs throughout the world.
2). To help better define the scientific, technical, social, economic, institutional, political and cultural constraints to the sustainable use of aquatic ecosystems and their resources, including their root causes, as well as developing practical means of addressing these constraints in a practical, timely and efficient manner.
3). To help facilitate the environmentally-responsible use and sustainability of water resources, consistent with meeting the water demands of humans for survival, well-being and economic development, while also maintaining life-supporting ecosystems.
