Sustainable freshwater resources are a foundation for human survival and economic development, and for maintaining life-supporting aquatic ecosystems. However, in addition to our inadequate understanding of the functioning and roles of aquatic ecosystems, our ability to properly integrate the myriad of relevant scientific, technical and socio-economic elements necessary to manage it continues to hinder achievement of sustainable aquatic resources. In addition to many areas of the world already experiencing water scarcity to varying degrees, this reality threatens both human health and global food supplies in many regions of the world.

Aquatic resources refers to water and its multiple roles as a natural resource and in supporting all life on Earth as we know it. It encompasses not only the liquid we know as water, but also all the possible roles of water, including human survival needs, supporting aquatic ecosystems, and facilitating economic development. Addressing aquatic resources issues requires that we consider not only the quantity and quality of the available water resources, but also the linkages and driving forces between freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. An additional dimension of complexity is encountered when international aquatic systems are considered.

To this end, Texas State University offers a Ph.D. Program in Aquatic Resources, designed to create professionals capable of addressing the sustainable use of aquatic resources for all human purposes, and for maintaining life-supporting aquatic ecosystems. This requires the identification, analysis and integration of not only the scientific, technical and engineering aspects of water resources, but also the socio-economic aspects. Additional information on the philosophy and objectives of the Ph.D. Program in Aquatic Resources, admission requirements, curriculum and courses, faculty members and their research interests, and financial support are available on the Aquatic Resources website (www.aquaticresources.bio.txstate.edu). Additional information can be obtained from the Program Director (Walter Rast; Tel: (512) 245-3554; e-mail: wr10@txstate.edu).
