Upcoming Conferences
15the National Nonpoint Source Monitoring Workshop, August 26 - 30, 2007
Previous Conferences
In partnership with the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico and partial funding from the UN Global Environment Facility, the River Systems Institute convened Project Rio on October 3-5, 2006. Held in Ciudad Juarez, this event was held as part of a larger UNGEF-PDF process to achieve agreement between Mexico and the United States on the development of a Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) and Strategic Action Program (SAP) for the development, management and sustainable use of the water resources of the Rio Bravo drainage basin.
Charting The Course Conference
Sponsored by the River Systems Institute, Chart the Course featured symposia focusing on how far we have come in terms of water management of the 2007 Texas Water Plan, the implications and obstacles to its implementation, and how policy activities of the next legislative session can provide a framework for overcoming these obstacles. In addition, the event provided insight into the complexity of water resource planning issues, including water conservation, reuse, environmental flows and groundwater management.
As Texans place ever-increasing demands on our fresh water resources, finding a balance between meeting human needs and maintaining ecosystem health has become a priority for our state. This conference focused on questions related to ensuring adequate environmental flows, which include both instream flows in the rivers and freshwater inflows to the bays and estuaries.
Through a series of integrated symposia and presentations, Flows for the Future focused on topics such as the ecological context of instream flows, scientific methods for establishing instream flow needs, groundwater/surface water flow interconnections, and the development of practices and policy for instream flow management.
