The Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA), a software program developed by The Nature Conservancy, provides useful information for those trying to understand the ecological implications of a particular flow pattern or water management scenario. This software program examines over 67 ecologically relevant statistics derived from daily hydrologic data and is used by over the world by resource managers and scientists to assess how current operations for a particular river, lake, or groundwater basin differ from the system’s natural flow regime. Designed for water resource managers and scientists, this course provides an introduction of the applications and functions of the IHA software and includes a basic tutorial in using this software. This introduction CEU course is the precursor to an extensive 2-day IAH workshop to be scheduled in 2006.

Designed for non-scientists, this course provides an understanding of the process by which water resource managers and scientist determine instream flow needs. Visiting various locations along the San Marcos River, the course provides an on-site case study of the components that contribute to this process: hydrologic and water quality conditions, geomorphic characteristics, biological compositions, land-use activities, and stakeholder involvement. In addition to visiting unique sites along the San Marcos River, the course will feature guest speakers with expertise in the various components addressed. Course fees include all field trip expenses and a course handbook.
